🕵️‍♀️ Creating an Aesthetic in Midjourney

The best traditional artists have unique and recognizable styles. Can AI artists craft their own aesthetics using tools like Midjourney? It may not be easy and will require research and experimentation, but it is definitely possible. Today, I will share a few tips and recommendations on how to build your own style with Midjourney and reuse it for various ideas and subjects.

Identify Your Keywords

At the end of the day, your style will be defined by the sequence of keywords that you’ll be adding to your text prompts. Here’s how you can search for these keywords:

  • Use /describe command with the images you like, and experiment with the keywords and styles suggested by Midjourney.

  • Check out the images of other Midjourney users on the Midjourney website and see, which keywords might be behind the aesthetics you enjoy.

  • Research and experiment with various elements such as art movements, techniques, lighting effects, time periods, media types, etc.

Usually, this would be an iterative process, where you add new keywords, replace some of them, or change their order until you more or less reliably get the images in your unique style.

Experiment

In my brief style exploration for this post, I have come up with the following sequence of keywords:

1970s, cinematic, brutalism, overcast colorized

Now see how this simple sequence allows me to get different subjects in about the same style.

a young couple in the country side, 1970s, cinematic, brutalism, overcast colorized --ar 16:9 --s 50

a portrait of a young girl in front of city houses, 1970s, cinematic, brutalism, overcast colorized --ar 16:9 --s 50

a boy with a dog, 1970s, cinematic, brutalism, overcast colorized --ar 16:9 --s 50

Set Custom Preferences

As you have the sequence defining a specific aesthetic, you may set it as your custom option. For example, I’ll save my sequence as a depressive option 😆

/prefer option set option: depressive value: 1970s, cinematic, brutalism, overcast colorized --ar 16:9 --s 50

Now, if I type the following prompt, I’ll get my entire sequence with keywords and parameters attached to the prompt:

a portrait of a black old man --depressive

Final Tips

Midjourney is a very flexible tool, allowing people with different art preferences and tastes to express themselves. However, if you want to get some specific style from Midjourney, you’ll need to guide strongly:

  • Midjourney has its own style built into the AI model behind the tool. If you want to override it, reduce the stylize parameter to --s 0 or --s 50. If this is not enough, add --style raw.

  • Use the same word order when defining your aesthetic as even a slight change may redefine the results completely.

  • Experiment and have fun!

Happy Prompting!

🗞 News and Top Reads

  • A federal judge in California has narrowed down a copyright lawsuit filed by artists against Midjourney, Stability AI, and DeviantArt.

    • The judge, William Orrick, dismissed a claim against Midjourney because the artists provided conflicting information about whether Midjourney scrapes images itself or uses Stable Diffusion technology.

    • Orrick also agreed with all three companies that the images generated by the systems are unlikely to infringe on the artists' copyrights. The judge allowed the artists to amend their claims, but he said he was skeptical that allegations based on the systems' output would survive a legal challenge, unless the artists could show that the images were substantially similar to their own work.

  • Shutterstock has added new AI-powered editing features to its library of over 700 million images.

    • These features, which are currently in beta, allow customers to not only generate new content using AI, but also to easily edit and transform any image in the Shutterstock library.

    • Shutterstock's creative AI editing features are powered by the latest OpenAI technology.

  • OpenAI is releasing new beta features for ChatGPT Plus members.

    • These features include the ability to upload and work with files, as well as multimodal support.

    • This means that users will no longer need to select modes like “Browse with Bing” or “DALL-E 3” from the GPT-4 dropdown menu. Instead, ChatGPT will be able to guess what the user wants based on the context of the conversation.
